What is the working principle of air compressor?

In an air compressor, air is compressed by pulling in atmospheric air, reducing its volume and increasing its pressure. There are two types of air compressors.
  1. reciprocating type,
  2. rotary type
  • An air compressor is a versatile device used for supplying compressed at required pressure.
Eg. - for starting main engine of the ship, compressed air is required at 30 bar
-workshop purposes for removing dust
-spray paint
Air Compressor: Two Types
1. Reciprocating (Piston) Air Compressor:-
A reciprocating air compressor makes use of piston(s) to compress air and store it in a storage tank(or reservoir) .
  • Based on the number of compression stages, reciprocating compressor can be a single-stage or double-stage configuration.
  • In the single-stage unit, only one piston is used to compress air, whereas there are two pistons for air compression in the double-stage air compressor.
  • Double - stage compressor are used to compress air at higher pressure. As in double stage the air which is compressed in primary stage is input for the secondary stage.
  • For marine purpose multistage compressor is used along with inter-coolers at every stage of compression and aftercooler (for maintaining the final temperature)
since, it compresses air at much higher pressure so it is required to fit safety devices like
  • Bursting discs are fitted on the cooler shells (At water side).
  • Relief valves are fitted to discharge side for every stages.
  • Moisture drain valve (unloader) are fitted at each cooler side
  • Cooling water failure alarm.
  • Low L. O pressure alarm.
  • Delivery air high-temperature alarm on aftercooler outlet (Max 93°C)
2.Rotary Screw Air Compressor
  • These are either vane or screw type.
  • Each stage pressure rise is limited to 7 bar only.
  • It requires a high-speed drive.
(a) screw type
  • Over here, two spinning helical screws or rotors are involved for compressing air (instead of using pistons), hence the name.
  • As the screws mesh towards each other, air is compressed and pushed inside a storage tank.
(b) vane type
A centrifugal air compressor is also called a dynamic compressor.
  • It is applicable when the demand for compressed air is high.
  • In this unit, a high-speed rotating impeller increases velocity of air, which is directed towards a diffuser that converts the velocity of air into pressure.
  • A centrifugal air compressor requires more energy to operate than the other two air compressors.
Air Compressor: Working Mechanism Annair.com
  • In an air compressor, there are two major parts - a compressing system and a power source.
  • The compressing mechanism can be a piston, rotating impeller, or vane depending upon which type of compressor you are referring to.
  • As for the power, it is supplied by an electric motor or other energy sources.
  • The compressing mechanism, as the name suggests, helps in compressing atmospheric air by using energy from the power source.
  • The basic working principle of an air compressor is to compress atmospheric air, which is then used as per the requirements. In the process, atmospheric air is drawn in through an intake valve; more and more air is pulled inside a limited space mechanically by means of piston, impeller, or vane. Since the amount of pulled atmospheric air is increased in the receiver or storage tank, volume is reduced and pressure is raised automatically. In simpler terms, free or atmospheric air is compressed after reducing its volume and at the same time, increasing its pressure.

Important : How to Choose best compressed air dryer manufacturer in India

best compressed air dryer manufacturer in India

Before getting one be that as it may, it's imperative to know which sort of compressed air dryer you need and you ought to completely comprehend the details.

The four principle sorts of packed air dryers :
It is vital to see how each drying innovation attempts to realize which is best for your application.

Which manufacturer to choose?

There is a considerable measure of organizations out there that make packed air dryers. You could run with one of the huge setup brands, or select a shabby obscure brand (low-quality product where people put their label on it).
On the off chance that you officially claim a compressor of a specific maker, it may be a smart thought to purchase your dryer there moreover. The administration expert can then effectively benefit both machines at one time.
On the other hand, packed air dryers needn't bother with a great deal of upkeep (as aches as you keep them clean), so this won't not be an issue.
Tips on indicating the privilege compacted air dryer:
  • Don't over specify.
  • Don't under specify
  • A drying framework that lone contains an after cooler and a blending channel could make issues with buildup downstream from the after cooler.
  • Exploit the "drying" impact of weight diminished.
  • For applications requiring stream rates more than 100 CFM and dew focuses lower than - 40°F/°C, a desiccant dryer ought to be utilized
So before buying refrigerated air dryer or any types of air dryer you should keep your business requirement always first in mind.

What is the function of an air dryer?

Functioning of air dryer

A compressed air dryer is used for removing water vapor from compressed air. Compressed air dryers are commonly found in a wide range of industrial and commercial facilities. The process of air compression concentrates atmospheric contaminants, including water vapor.

This raises the dew point of the compressed air relative to free atmospheric air and leads to condensation within pipes as the compressed air cools downstream of the compressor.

Excessive water in compressed air, in either the liquid or vapor phase, can cause a variety of operational problems for users of compressed air. These include freezing of outdoor air lines, corrosion in piping and equipment, malfunctioning of pneumatic process control instruments, fouling of processes and products, and more.

There are various types of compressed air dryers. Their performance characteristics are typically defined by the dew point.
  •     Regenerative desiccant dryers, often called "regens" or "twin tower" dryers
  •     Refrigerated dryers
  •     Deliquescent dryers
  •     Membrane dryers

Refrigerated dryer

Refrigeration dryers employ two heat exchangers, one for air-to-air and one for air-to-refrigeration. However, there is also a single TRISAB heat exchanger that combines both functions. The compressors used in this type of dryer are usually of the hermetic type and the most common gas used is R-134a and R-410a for smaller air dryers up to 100 cfm. Older and larger dryers still use R-22 and R-404a refrigerants. The goal of having two heat exchangers is that the cold outgoing air cools down the hot incoming air and reduces the size of compressor required. At the same time the increase in the temperature of outgoing air prevents re-condensation.

Some manufacturers produce "cycling dryers". These store a cold mass that cools the air when the compressor is OFF. When the refrigeration compressor runs, the large mass takes much longer to cool, so the compressor runs longer, and stays OFF longer. These units operate at lower dew points, typically in the 35–40 °F range. When selected with the optional "cold coalescing filter", these units can deliver compressed air with lower dew points. Non-cycling dryers use a hot gas by pass valve to prevent the dryer from icing up.

Some manufacturers produce "cold coalescing filters" that are positioned inside of the air dryer at the point of the lowest air temperature (the point at which maximum condensation has occurred).

Some manufacturers are marketing compressors with built-in refrigeration dryers, but these have had a mixed acceptance in the market.

Energy saving in high-pressure reciprocating air compressor

Air compressors account for a significant amount of electricity usage in Indian industries. The production of compressed air is one of the expensive processes practiced in manufacturing industries. Our major aim in this project is to apply an energy recovery technique and on load reduction technique in high-pressure reciprocating air compressor.

We applied our custom-designed energy recovery techniques and also analyzed the limitation and the risks involved in the proposed technique. In the conventional method, the hot pressurized air coming out of the blow-molding process is emitted into atmosphere, whereas in the proposed model the compressed air is recycled to the compressor receiver; also further energy reduction takes place due to reducing the operating pressure by introducing a pressure-reducing valve (PRV).

The implementation of PRV reduces the loading time by 96 min/day, and energy consumption is reduced by 365.25 units/day.

How can you Select An Best Air Compressor

Selecting an Air Compressor

When it comes to selecting an air compressor it takes time and patience to find the right one to fit your application. There are many factors to consider when purchasing an air compressor and the big two are quality and reliability. Companies cannot afford to see their equipment fail. When machines go down, so does a business. With that in mind it is always important to research all products to find one that is not only reliable, but cost effective as well. When evaluating an air compressor take these components into consideration:
Airend - Check the packaging thoroughly for engineering data from the Air Dryer Manufacturer. Evaluate the performance and reliability of the machine before making any purchases. For instance, Gardner Denver is a company that has proven their products work well and are very durable.

Cooling Systems - To handle ambient operating temperatures the air compressor's cooling system must always work properly. An air-cooled compressor will have either an integrally mounted or separate oil and air cooler to keep the machine running properly.

Drive - Belt drives are easy to maintain and will provide the most flexibility in pressure selection. With automated belt-tensioning devices the transmission efficiency is ensured and the bearings are protected from excessive stress. Direct drive couples the airend directly to the motor using a coupling.

Controls - The system needs to be easy to operate for the user and just as easy to maintain.

Interconnecting Piping - Selecting an air compressor with rigid piping with flexible connections will ensure there will be no leaks.

Motor - Remember to compare the brake horsepower to nameplate rating. Motors that go well into the service factor are not as reliable.

Selecting the proper air compressor for your application can improve operational efficiency and increase your bottom line. Don't let high air compressor repair cost bring your company to a halt. Long before an air compressor reaches the breaking point, consider preventive maintenance from a local service department.
