All you need to know about industrial Water chillers

industrial Water chillers

An industrial chiller is a portable cooling system often used in commercial and industrial facilities. An industrial chiller mainly works as a refrigeration system that either cools down a fluid or dehumidifies air. Industrial water chillers have the ability to cool pieces of equipment in a quick and efficient way. Keeping equipment cool can continue production rates at an optimal level.

Though industrial chillers are used to cool equipment, they aren’t really chilling anything. An industrial chiller doesn’t make an object colder; rather it is just removing all the heat.
Industrial air chillers and water chillers remove heat from either water or air and circulate it through a heat ex-changers to cool the surrounding air or equipment.

If you’re cooking in a kitchen and want to cool the food you’ve made, you would put it in a refrigerator. Similarly, the same idea is applied across the process of industrial chilling. An industrial chiller is used in four steps:
  • Refrigeration: To chill equipment, it must first undergo a refrigeration process. This process transfers the heat that comes with the equipment, ultimately lowering the temperature.
  • Evaporation: Once the refrigeration process begins, the heat will evaporate from either water or air. This process will change the water or air into vapor.
  • Compression: Once the vapor is formed, it reaches a compressor that increases its temperature and pressure.
  • Condensation:From the compressor, the vapor then reaches a condenser that lowers the temperature once again and turns said vapor back into a liquid.
Industrial chillers are used across a gamut of industries such as pharmaceutical, beverage, chemical, printing, rubber, blow molding, injection molding and die casting.

Advantages of water cooled chillers:

  • A more precise heat transfer, compared to air-cooled chillers
  • More energy efficient
  • Longer lifespan compared to air-cooled chillers

Disadvantages of water cooled chillers:

  • Higher up-front costs
  • Higher maintenance and upkeep costs
  • Requires more space than air-cooled chillers

Advantages of air cooled chillers

  • Lower up-front costs
  • Require less space than water-cooled chillers
  • No water treatment costs, lower maintenance and upkeep costs

Disadvantages of air cooled chillers

  • Shorter lifespan compared to water-cooled chillers
  • Not as energy efficient
  • A less precise heat transfer

Installing an industrial chiller is a must in every industry. It should be looked at as a sophisticated refrigeration system that can consistently maintain an effective productivity level.

Water chiller manufacturer and exporter in Mumbai India

Water chiller manufacturer will use either absorption or vapor-compression refrigeration cycles to produce their cooling effect. Both cycles use a refrigerant that strategically absorbs heat in one place as it evaporates and then releases heat in another place as it condenses. In most chillers this occurs in a four-stage cycle of pressurization, condensation, depressurization, and evaporation. First, the refrigerant vapor is pressurized, either by heating or by means of a compressor. Second, the refrigerant moves into a condenser comprised of a coil or set of tubes with either water or air circulating around it.

The refrigerant vapor cools inside the condenser and changes into a liquid, rejecting a large amount of heat in the process. This heat is absorbed and borne away by the water or air flowing around it. Thirdly, the refrigerant liquid proceeds through an expansion valve that decreases the pressure and allows for evaporation to take place. The flash evaporation that occurs at the expansion valve cools the liquid drastically.

How does a chiller system work?

Water Chiller Working

How Chillers Work

Designing a high reliability chiller requires an in depth understanding of chiller components, including their limitations as applied to specific cooling applications. A reliable and functional chiller system is a result of quality engineering and manufacturing activity.  When properly executed, ROI goes well beyond the initial commissioning at the point of application.

A process chiller removes heat from a heat source – an environment where temperature must be maintained on a continuous basis, otherwise known as the process. Heat removal is based on the principle that heat will move from a hotter source to a colder source.

A chiller comprises two main parts called circuits – a fluid and refrigeration circuit. These circuits, especially refrigeration, become more complex as temperature requirements drop below -40°C. With low- and ultra-low temperature cooling, system design incorporates additional cooling circuits (called two-stage, three-stage, and auto-cascade systems) and refrigerants.

A chiller transfers the heat from the process to the fluid circuit then to the refrigeration circuit and finally to the condenser where it is expelled.

An air-cooled condenser expels heat by blowing cool air across the condenser, moving heat into the atmosphere.
A water-cooled condenser expels heat by circulating cool water through lines in the condenser. The water moves the heat to an external cooling apparatus.

What constitutes high reliability chiller operation? It begins with design – matching component capacity to cooling requirements. Specifying the right components (valves, fluids, pumps, etc.) is critical. The interactive diagram below shows a chiller with single-stage refrigeration. It describes the major components of a chiller and their importance to reliable operation in the selection of a specific design.
